I-O DATA has joined forces with Canonical, with the goal of introducing the advantages of open source and Ubuntu to a multitude of devices throughout Japan. I-O DATA will now deliver its hardware with Ubuntu pre-installed and is now an authorized seller of Ubuntu Pro for Devices, a subscription that offers a decade of security updates for the OS and applications, along with device management features.

Innovation thrives in open source

The open-source concept has become the norm in modern software development, but with new regulations like the Cyber Resilience Act emphasizing strict security measures, businesses are realizing the importance of robust support. Ubuntu’s extensive community adoption and proven enterprise applications make it an ideal foundational system for organizations seeking to unify and streamline their operations. With Ubuntu Pro for Devices, I-O DATA is taking it a step further by providing subscription-based support for over 30,000 open-source packages, ensuring longevity and reliability for their customers.

Expanding possibilities with a resilient operating system

By integrating Ubuntu Pro for Devices, I-O DATA is empowering its customers with a reliable operating system known for high performance in various scenarios. Ubuntu is currently utilized across a range of industries such as automotive, education, aerospace, and healthcare. I-O DATA plans to introduce Ubuntu to companies in these sectors, aiming for an initial target of 800 million yen in the first year.

“Through the utilization of Ubuntu appliances as network edge devices, we anticipate delivering more stable AI image analysis services in addition to our current network cameras.” – Masaya Kawase, Director, Customer Contact Point Digitalization Support Division, Business Management Division, OPTiM Corp.

A welcomed initiative amongst I-O Data’s collaborators

“Our success in serving over 40,000 units in the local digital signage market is largely thanks to our enduring partnership with I-O DATA Device. We are currently developing an innovative digital signage set-top box powered by Ubuntu. We believe this commitment will contribute to your continued business growth.” – Yasuo Fukunaga, President and Representative Director, Cyberstation, Inc.

As the initiative gains momentum, I-O DATA aims to collaborate with additional partners to expand hardware options, including models with NPU for AI processing at the network edge. Beyond the mentioned partners, I-O DATA has engaged ORCA Management Organization (handling all patient data in Japan) and Software Research Associates (SRA), a technology consultancy firm extensively involved in providing Japanese language support for Ubuntu.

I-O DATA is looking to strengthen its relationship with Canonical as this initiative progresses, appealing to organizations already utilizing Ubuntu and potential clients seeking to move away from closed-source solutions.
