The PlayStation 6 will follow its predecessors in utilizing an AMD chip, but this outcome was uncertain until 2022, when Intel lost the opportunity to design Sony’s new console. As per a recent report from Reuters, Intel and AMD were the final two contenders in the bidding war for the contract. Apparently, a disagreement over Intel’s profit margin per chip sold to Sony hindered the deal. AMD, however, emerged victorious through a competitive bidding process that gradually eliminated other competitors, leaving only Intel behind. Discussions between Intel and Sony spanned several months in 2022, involving engagements between the firms’ CEOs, engineers, and top-level executives.
Regarding the failed bid for PlayStation 6, Intel shared a statement with Reuters stating they “staunchly oppose this portrayal but refrain from commenting on ongoing or possible client interactions.” Meanwhile, AMD opted to stay silent on the matter.
While pricing disagreements played a role in the decision-making process, concerns about compatibility were also weighed, as transitioning from AMD to Intel for the PlayStation 6 would have jeopardized backward compatibility. This issue was deliberated among engineers and executives from both companies.
Despite its release being years away, details about the PlayStation 6 are scarce at present. Earlier this year, it was disclosed that Sony’s goal is to make it the most formidable next-generation console, with machine learning playing a crucial part in delivering what manufacturers are hinting as the most significant generational advancement yet.
