In the early months of 2023, Double Fine Productions – the studio responsible for games like Psychonauts and Brutal Legend – unveiled a massive 23-hour documentary detailing the complete journey of creating the studio’s latest title ‘Psychonauts 2’. Teaming up with Limited Run Games, this comprehensive documentary is now being offered in a highly exclusive Blu Ray format, complete with a bonus epilogue.
In their announcement, the Limited Run Games team stated, “Introducing the Double Fine PsychOdyssey Limited Edition Blu-ray Collector’s Set! 2 Player Productions’ incredibly detailed 33 episode documentary has been packed onto region-free polycarbonate discs for you to enjoy.”
Priced at $74.99 and restricted to just 2000 copies, this collector’s edition Blu Ray set boasts:
- Double Fine PsychOdyssey 33-Episode Series in 1080p HD on 6 Blu-ray Discs
- SteelBook Packaging with Transparent Slipcover
- Digipak with 2 Bonus Blu-ray Discs of Archival and Previously Unreleased Material
- 80-page Color Perfect Bound Behind-the-Scenes Booklet
- Individually Numbered Limited Edition Rigid Slipcase
- Region Free dics with English Subtitles
Interestingly, the YouTube release of PsychOdyssey was presented in 4K resolution, however, according to Limited Run Games, “PsychOdyssey was initially shared online in 4K to enhance streaming quality, but the production team actually captured the content in native 1080p HD and then upscaled it to 4K during post-production. The expense of manufacturing 4K discs was found to be impractical and without a genuine 4K source or HDR color space, the decision was made to generate 1080p files specifically for the Blu-ray release, offering a comprehensive viewing experience.”
Documentaries focusing on video game development have been around for some time and always offer an intriguing insight. Nevertheless, PsychOdyssey sets a new standard by portraying the countless challenges and victories of game development – making it a valuable watch even if you opt against acquiring the limited edition steelbook, as the documentary is readily available for viewing on YouTube.
