Beyond recent staff reductions in January and the shutting down of studios in May, there are forthcoming job cuts within Microsoft’s Xbox sector this week, according to Tom Warren from the Verge.

It was disclosed by Xbox’s Jessie Thomas on X yesterday that her position at Microsoft had been “eliminated”. Following this announcement on X, Tom Warren responded indicating further job layoffs at Xbox during this week. While initial speculation revolved around Thomas being the sole individual affected, Warren has since clarified that multiple employees at Xbox will be impacted. Warren mentioned some hours ago, “more Xbox layoffs happening this week.” He also noted, “Microsoft laid off Jessie while she was on vacation.” For those without context, Thomas has been a part of Microsoft since 2015 and was serving as the Senior Business PM of Culture Programs as of 2022.

An update provided an hour ago by The Verge reporter emphasized, “as per my tweet, it’s not just one person.”

Although there have not been any public reports from other Microsoft/Xbox team members about layoffs happening today or earlier this week, it is expected that further news will surface in the upcoming days. We will keep you informed as soon as more information becomes available.

Earlier in the day, it was noted that Tales of Kenzera ZAU Developer Surgent Studios also experienced layoffs. The studio expressed that around twelve individuals had to be released from their positions.

Following the significant wave of layoffs at Microsoft earlier in January, the company confirmed the closure of three Xbox studios in May – among them were Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, and multiple other Bethesda Softworks studios. Subsequent to these studio closures, speculation arose that additional job cuts were imminent at Xbox. Rhys Elliott, a Games Industry Analyst from MIDiA Research, proposed that Xbox is shifting its focus towards larger projects. “Xbox, despite its adept PR efforts in recent years, likely deems these studio closures as a ‘’you need to break a few eggs to make an omelet’’ scenario,” he remarked back in May. “It is a significant loss that some of the most talented developers in the industry are affected, and now their livelihoods have been disrupted.”
