Daniel Ahmad, a video games analyst at market research firm Niko Partners, has revealed some staggering statistics indicating that the PlayStation 5 is massively outselling the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. According to Ahmad’s research, the PS5 has achieved almost five times the number of sales in the first three months of the year compared to the combined sales of Microsoft’s consoles. This significant lead in sales for Sony marks a sharp decline in the performance of Microsoft’s flagship gaming devices.

In a detailed thread posted on Twitter, Ahmad broke down Sony’s recently released results for the 2023-24 financial year. He mentioned that the PlayStation 5 shipped 4.5 million units in the last quarter (January-March 2024), a number that far surpasses the estimated sales of the Xbox Series X|S during the same period, highlighting the substantial gap in sales between the two gaming giants.

According to Ahmad, this widening sales gap has become more pronounced over the past year. Previously, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S were selling at a much closer ratio of 2:1. The current numbers clearly indicate the growing discrepancy in performance between Sony and Microsoft in the gaming console market.

As a response to the poor sales performance of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, Microsoft has made controversial decisions such as the closure of several studios, including developers like Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin. These actions have not only stirred fan backlash but have also raised concerns about Microsoft’s gaming strategy and the leadership of its Xbox division.

Looking ahead, with rumors of a Nintendo Switch successor on the horizon and the potential release of a upgraded PS5 Pro, the outlook for Microsoft in the gaming industry seems challenging. While Microsoft plans to launch its own Xbox mobile game store focusing on popular titles like Candy Crush and Minecraft for the mobile market, there is uncertainty regarding any concrete plans to boost console sales.

Recent reports suggest that Microsoft is grappling with internal debates about the future of the Call of Duty franchise on its platforms. With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, there are hints that the franchise may be integrated into the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. While this move could attract more players and potentially increase console sales, there are concerns about potential revenue implications for the franchise.

Overall, these developments point towards a competitive landscape where Microsoft is struggling to retain its position in the gaming market against rivals with more cohesive long-term strategies. As the gap in sales between the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S continues to widen, Microsoft faces challenges in regaining momentum in the gaming industry.
