Apple’s Artificial Intelligence AI will not be available in Europe in 2024.

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, made an announcement during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference held at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, US, on Monday, June 10, 2024. The decision was shared that three newly revealed features, including the prominent “Apple Intelligence” AI product, will not be launched in the European Union in 2024 due to uncertainties in regulations stemming from the bloc’s Digital Markets Act antitrust legislation.

The European Union implemented the Digital Markets Act in 2023, driven by concerns regarding the dominant market positions of a few major technology corporations like Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok parent ByteDance. The regulation aims to ensure that essential functions are compatible across different devices and ecosystems.

Apple expressed that due to the interoperability obligations imposed by the DMA, they fear compromising the security of user data and privacy, leading to the exclusion of features such as Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring, and enhancements to SharePlay from the EU market. This includes impacts on iPhones, iPads, and Macs due to the functionality of iPhone Mirroring.

The absence of Apple’s AI product could disappoint consumers as Apple Intelligence has the capacity to proofread and rewrite text in various tones, generate custom emojis known as Genmoji, locate specific messages on an iPhone, transcribe phone conversations, and provide priority notifications. Moreover, Apple had announced collaborations with OpenAI and plans to introduce additional models to the platform.

Although Apple’s stock showed minimal movement following the announcement, the company’s European net sales in 2023 were recorded at $94.3 billion, nearly a quarter of its global net sales. Furthermore, Apple Intelligence will also not be introduced in Greater China, where the company amassed $72.6 billion in sales in 2023.

Apple expressed its willingness to engage with the European Union to explore solutions that allow the delivery of these features to EU customers without compromising their safety and security.
