The American private healthcare giant Ascension recently fell victim to a cyber-incursion that forced the company to take parts of its IT infrastructure offline. The company detected “unusual activity” on some of its network systems, which was later classified as a “cybersecurity event,” indicative of a potential ransomware attack.

Although Ascension did not provide specific details regarding the nature of the incident, the company hinted at potential data theft, further suggesting the likelihood of a ransomware attack. In response to the breach, Ascension activated its incident response plan, involved relevant authorities, and engaged Google Mandiant experts to conduct an investigation.

Disrupted activities

The shutdown of certain network components may have an impact on the company’s day-to-day operations, affecting clinical operations and requiring business partners to temporarily disconnect from the Ascension environment as a precautionary measure. Despite the disruptions, Ascension reassured that patient care delivery remains a top priority, with care teams implementing necessary procedures to ensure minimal impact on services.

Ascension, known as one of the largest non-profit healthcare systems in the United States, operates numerous hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities across the nation. With a broad spectrum of medical services ranging from primary care to hospital-based care, the corporation manages 140 hospitals, 40 senior care facilities, and employs over 8,500 providers. In 2023, Ascension reported a revenue of $28.3 billion, according to BleepingComputer.
