Challenges for Larian as Baldur’s Gate 3 Wins Accolades
Winning multiple prestigious awards, including Game of the Year titles at events like the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, and BAFTA, has posed some unexpected challenges for Larian, the studio behind Baldur’s Gate 3. The acclaim continued well into 2024, with the game sweeping categories at various ceremonies, culminating in a recent triumph at the Develop: Star Awards in the UK.
At the Develop: Star Awards, Baldur’s Gate 3 claimed the top spot in several categories, underlining its excellence in different aspects of game development:
- Best Narrative: Baldur’s Gate 3 | Larian Studios
- Best Game Design: Helldivers 2
- Best Studio: Larian Studios
- And many more!
Despite the acclaim, Larian faced unforeseen disruptions due to the extensive awards circuit. CEO Swen Vincke shared in an interview with EDGE magazine that the constant need to attend ceremonies led to workflow challenges:
“It affects development – there’s a lot of them. This has been a real problem. We had to rotate teams so that different people went to different award shows. It would be cool if everybody could agree to do it all at the same time because it is surprisingly draining on the soul.”
With the studio nearly ready to bid farewell to Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Forgotten Realms, Larian has embarked on new ventures. They have shifted focus to creating original IPs, with two projects in the works. To facilitate their expansion, Larian recently inaugurated an office in Warsaw, Poland.
While the team is gearing up to conclude Baldur’s Gate 3 with a final update featuring official modding tools and enhancements to the evil endings, they’ve made it clear that the future lies in fresh narratives and unexplored realms.
