Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, recently encountered a security breach that has led to a ransom demand to prevent the disclosure of 1.5 terabytes of data on July 1st. This incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the company’s network infrastructure and the potential implications for its subsidiaries.

The breach was disclosed following a successful commercial launch of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, an expansion that garnered significant sales within its initial three days on the market. Although the sales figures were positive, the cybersecurity threat posed a significant challenge to Kadokawa Corporation.

The breach was discovered by threat intelligence platform Falcon Feeds, which revealed details of the hackers’ infiltration into Kadokawa’s network. The hackers described their access to the network and the encryption of various subsidiaries’ data, highlighting vulnerabilities in Kadokawa’s network architecture.

In response to the breach, Kadokawa Corporation issued a press release acknowledging the cyberattack on their servers and outlining their efforts to address the situation and assess the potential impact of the data breach. The company assured that customer credit card information was not compromised in the attack.

Besides FromSoftware, Kadokawa Corporation also owns ACQUIRE, a renowned game studio responsible for titles such as Tenchu, Way of the Samurai, and Octopath Traveler. ACQUIRE recently launched the real-time RPG Scars of Mars on the Steam platform, showcasing the diverse portfolio of Kadokawa’s subsidiaries.
