FSR4 will be grounded in artificial intelligence.

Jack Huynh revealed some key updates about AMD’s graphics division during the IFA event. The company is shifting its focus towards more streamlined graphics card offerings. Additionally, the decision was made to merge the RDNA and CDNA architectures to streamline the development process. One of the most significant announcements is that the upcoming FSR4 will operate using artificial intelligence technology.

FSR4: Following the footsteps of Intel and NVIDIA, it will be AI-driven!

Previous iterations of FSR did not leverage artificial intelligence, relying instead on spatial and temporal scaling techniques. With the fourth generation, the technology will now revolve around AI-driven frame generation.

The primary objective behind this shift is to enhance the battery life of portable devices, such as the ROG Ally consoles. As Jack Huynh stated, “I want to be able to play Wukong for three hours, not just 60 minutes.” For instance, the ability to cap frames per second at 30 or 35 could reduce hardware usage and enhance device battery life.

While the focus is initially on portable devices, the new version of FSR will eventually be compatible with graphics cards. Jack Huynh mentioned that his teams have been working on this for the past 9 to 12 months, indicating that the wait for its implementation may not be lengthy.

However, OC3D raises a valid question about whether this announcement is linked to the unveiling of the PS5 Pro, speculating whether this upscaling technology is derived from Sony’s console or vice versa, given AMD’s involvement.
