Game Pass PC once more misses out on support for NVIDIA DLSS/AMD FSR during the release of Still Wakes the Deep.

Despite advancements in the Game Pass PC and Microsoft Store versions of PC games, there are still evident gaps to bridge, as evidenced by the recent debut of Still Wakes the Deep.

The latest addition to Game Pass PC, The Chinese Room’s first-person survival horror adventure, launched with notable features missing, notably NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR, both readily available on platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store. This replicates similar occurrences with titles such as Neon Giant’s The Ascent in 2021 (which lacked ray tracing) and Gunfire’s Remnant II in 2023.

Intriguingly, The Chinese Room took the time to provide a detailed explanation on the Steam community forums:

Additional technical limitations arise from differences in how the Game Pass version is constructed compared to its Steam/Epic Store counterparts. Consequently, alternative upscaling options are unavailable in the Game Pass edition.

The PS5, Xbox X|S, and WinGDK (Game Pass PC) versions share similar features. While we introduced supplementary upscaling options to the Steam and Epic Store releases, implementing them on WinGDK necessitates a custom-coded solution.

We appreciate your feedback. Despite being a small team, we strive to cater to a wide variety of hardware setups. Should it be viable, we will update everyone on the potential addition of this feature in the future.

Fortunately, the studio has recently announced an upcoming update scheduled for July that will introduce NVIDIA DLSS to the Game Pass PC version of Still Wakes the Deep, along with various other fixes including resolving crash/performance issues, default setting resets, subtitle deactivations, on-screen button prompt visibility, and addressing the Mud Handling progression bug. Additionally, the update will introduce a Yellow Marker toggle, allowing players to disable navigation aids represented by yellow paint spills.

The Chinese Room is actively exploring the addition of AMD FSR, promising to inform the community once a decision is reached.
