Recent developments in machine learning offer promising prospects for education and growth in the school setting. Matthew Jones, a specialized educator who has been engaging in AI education with the International Society for Technology in Education, is witnessing this firsthand. He educates in four disciplines spanning three different educational levels, and while sourcing suitable materials for his students was previously a difficulty, AI is aiding him in accomplishing that task swiftly. Matthew affirms, “AI has revolutionized my teaching experience. I now have more time for other responsibilities, and I am more prepared for my students than ever before.”

At Google, we are enthusiastic about the possibilities that AI will unleash. We are also dedicated to assisting educators and learners in gaining fair access to the abilities and resources essential to prosper in the current and future economy. Many instructors share Matthew’s passion for integrating AI into the classroom. A majority of educators acknowledge the importance of using AI tools in the future, with over 30% already implementing or experimenting with AI tools in their educational practices. Additionally, with 72% of students seeking guidance on the responsible use of generative AI, educators anticipate adopting AI tools in the future.

Today, Google.org is proclaiming funding exceeding $25 million to five educational institutions to equip over 500,000 instructors and students throughout the United States with fundamental AI proficiencies through the creation of AI curricula, teacher education, and meaningful, all-encompassing AI education experiences:

  • International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) will inaugurate GenerationAI, an initiative designed to offer educators the knowledge, tools, and confidence to securely and responsibly harness the potential of AI in the classroom. Collaborating with the National Education Association (NEA), Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), Center for Black Educator Development (CBED), Latinos for Education (L4E), Indigitize, and Playlab, ISTE’s GenerationAI initiative will extend to educators nationwide through top-notch professional learning on AI, specifically devised by and for educators.
  • 4-H will amplify AI knowledge and expertise accessibility for rural learners and educators nationwide, encompassing targeted localized programs in Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah, and Pennsylvania.
  • aiEDU will bridge AI comprehension disparities for underserved pupils by delivering top-tier AI curriculums and enhancing capacities in rural and Indigenous communities.
  • CodePath will devise and provide industry-approved AI coursework to underprivileged college computing students.
  • STEM From Dance will eliminate gender disparities in STEM by creating and offering foundational AI content to girls of color, enabling them to refine dance choreography through sound, animation, and technology.

In conjunction with the funding from Google.org, ISTE and 4-H will incorporate Google AI educational materials into their training programs. The organizations will introduce Generative AI for Educators, a two-hour self-paced course designed to aid educators in saving time and enriching student learning using generative AI tools. This course is one of various resources provided by Google to facilitate individuals in acquiring AI expertise across all industries, including the Google AI Essentials course and the inclusion of AI training within the Google Career Certificates program.

This announcement builds on the influence of Google.org’s $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, which will enable over one million individuals in acquiring vital AI proficiencies by supporting top-tier workforce development and educational organizations nationwide. Through these new ventures, Google.org aims to equip the next generation of professionals and educators with indispensable AI expertise for educational settings and beyond.
