The Honor Magic V Flip has been unveiled as the inaugural foldable smartphone of Honor, adopting a unique “flip” design.

Honor made a major move by introducing their first flip foldable handset, setting the stage for increased competition in the premium market segment alongside key rivals such as Samsung.

Initially, the Honor Magic V Flip will hit the market exclusively in China, highlighting its advanced camera system and artificial intelligence functionalities.

In the initial quarter of 2024, Honor managed to secure the top spot in the Chinese smartphone market based on market share data from the International Data Corporation.

Following its separation from Huawei in 2020 to evade U.S. restrictions, the brand has been focused on rapid expansion. This strategic shift has led to the introduction of several high-end smartphone models, aiming to rival industry giants like Apple and Samsung on a global scale.

The term “foldables” denotes smartphones featuring flexible displays. The current market offers two predominant styles – foldables that open like a book and those that vertically fold, reminiscent of classic flip phones but with concealed hinges.

While Honor already has a book-style foldable device in its lineup, known as the Magic V2, the Magic V Flip is the brand’s pioneering vertically-folding smartphone.

Initial reports from earlier this year hinted at Honor’s plans to launch a flip phone model. This strategic move offers Honor a more diverse product portfolio in the burgeoning foldable market, which experienced a 49% year-over-year growth rate in the initial quarter of 2024, surpassing the overall smartphone market expansion.

Competing against devices from industry rivals like Oppo, Vivo, and Samsung, the Magic V Flip boasts advanced AI capabilities, a focal point for manufacturers looking to distinguish their offerings from the competition.

Specifically, Honor emphasized the Honor AI Portrait Engine feature, designed to enhance image quality by producing sharper images with blurred backgrounds.

Although debuting exclusively in China, Honor traditionally expands the availability of its devices to encompass international markets over time.
