Initial Evaluation of PlayStation 5 Pro Reveals Upgrades for Exclusive Games, Hogwarts Legacy, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2, and More

The PlayStation 5 Enhanced Edition is poised to deliver upgraded visuals and performance for games, even in the absence of patches, although certain titles will see a more significant boost from the console’s enhanced specifications.

When discussing third-party games running on the PlayStation 5 Enhanced Edition, it appears that the console’s heightened power may not fully address the low base resolution some of these games operate at. For instance, Alan Wake’s second installment maintains the same resolutions on both the 60 and 30 frames per second modes as it does on the base model, namely 846p and 1260p, with Presumably Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) potentially substituting AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2. The 30 FPS mode may include ray tracing, while the 60 FPS mode showcases screen-space reflections. Magical Academy Legacy exhibits an advancement over the base model, incorporating ray-traced reflections and potentially even ray-traced shadows combined with screen-space reflections. Interestingly, Dragon’s Dogma Sequel stands out as a title that could experience a substantial performance enhancement on the PlayStation 5 Enhanced Edition, appearing to run at 60 FPS, conceivably utilizing PSSR. Assassin’s Creed Shadows also appeared to operate at 60 FPS but at a lower 846p resolution, likely upscaled to a higher resolution through PSSR.

Based on this initial evaluation, it appears that the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upscaler could indeed be the revolutionary element that Digital Foundry anticipates. While the other two pillars of the PlayStation 5 Enhanced Edition are crucial, they may not yield as significant an impact as the AI-driven upscaler.
