One of the main safety researchers at OpenAI, Jan Leike, who recently left the artificial intelligence company, revealed on Tuesday that he has joined a competing AI startup named Anthropic.

Having declared his resignation from OpenAI at the beginning of May 15, before the company disbanded the superalignment team, which he co-headed, a squad established in 2023 emphasizing long-term AI risks. Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder of OpenAI, also announced his departure on X on May 14.

“I’m enthusiastic about joining @AnthropicAI to pursue the superalignment mission,” Leike shared on X on Tuesday. “My new team will be focusing on scalable oversight, weak-to-strong generalization, and automated alignment research.”

Anthropic is supported by Amazon, pledging up to $4 billion for a minority share in the venture.

After stepping away from OpenAI, Leike expressed in a post, “Leaving this position has been one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make, as it’s crucial for us to determine how to direct and tame AI systems that are significantly more intelligent than us.”

The significance of AI safety has rapidly increased within the tech field following OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT towards the end of 2022, initiating a surge in generative AI products and investments. There has been apprehension in the industry that companies are releasing potent AI products to the general public swiftly without thoroughly assessing potential societal harm.

Microsoft-backed Open AI declared on Tuesday that they established a new safety and security panel overseen by top executives, including CEO Sam Altman. This committee will provide “safety and security recommendations for OpenAI projects and operations” to the board of directors.

Anthropic, established in 2021 by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, as well as other former OpenAI managers, introduced their ChatGPT competitor, Claude 3, in March. The company secured funding from Google, Salesforce, and Zoom, in addition to Amazon’s investment.
