Renowned media magnate Jeffrey Katzenberg is optimistic about technology as he secures more funding for startup investments. However, he is steering clear of digital media ventures.

WndrCo, the investment firm founded by Katzenberg and former Dropbox finance chief Sujay Jaswa, has just raised $460 million. Originally established as a holding company in 2016 with funds from private backers, WindfallCo now oversees a total of $1.3 billion. The company has made investments in various tech enterprises, including Dapper, Databricks, Gemini, and Robinhood. Additionally, WndrCo has ventures in digital security firms Aura and Twingate.

Quibi, a short-form entertainment platform founded by Katzenberg in 2018, ceased operations in 2020, despite raising $1.75 billion from investors like Disney, Comcast’s NBCUniversal, and AT&T’s WarnerMedia. Katzenberg, a former DreamWorks co-founder and Walt Disney Studios chair, is now focused on cybersecurity, emerging work trends, and consumer tech opportunities at WndrCo.

While joking about grandiose visions for the company’s portfolio, Katzenberg expressed a desire for the firms they support to not only be profitable but also make positive impacts on the world.

WndrCo has already invested in companies like Airtable and Deel and is placing bets on Twingate, a VPN alternative, and cybersecurity firm Pango. Jaswa emphasized the importance of tech innovation being accompanied by adequate safeguards.

Both Katzenberg and Jaswa are keen on establishing regulatory frameworks for AI, acknowledging the uncertainties surrounding its development. Jaswa remains hopeful, citing historical instances where technological leaps were driven by a desire to avoid certain tasks.
