MX Linux has officially rolled out MX Linux 23.4 “Libretto,” which signifies the fourth iteration of the MX-23 series. This latest update brings a plethora of fixes for bugs, updates for the kernel, and enhancements for applications since the inception of MX-23.

Highlights of MX Linux 23.4

The latest MX Linux 23.4 is built on the sturdy foundation of Debian 12.7 and includes all the recent updates from both Debian and MX repositories. This ensures that users benefit from heightened stability, security patches, and the latest software advancements.

Notable improvements have been made since the prior release of 23.3. Core packages for Xfce 4.18 have been refreshed, providing users of the Xfce desktop with improved performance and new functionalities.

Furthermore, enhancements have been made to the MX Packageinstaller, now displaying all installed packages in the Enabled, Test, and Backports tabs, rather than just those accessible in configured repositories.

Security and ease of use were key focal points in this version. The Live USB Maker tool now defaults to LUKS2 encryption when crafting encrypted live USB devices, enhancing data protection for users on the go.

The MX USB Unmounter has undergone enhancements to its user interface and now includes an option to appear solely in the system tray when a removable device is inserted, streamlining the user experience.

For users of the KDE desktop environment, the PipeWire setup script (pipewire-setup-mx) has been updated to ensure a more stable startup under sysVinit, benefiting KDE users. Moreover, MX Tweak now includes a KDE option to enable or disable Plasma Discover’s autostart system tray updater notifier, granting users more control over system notifications.

AHS users will notice updated firmware packages that have been ported back from Debian Sid, improving compatibility with newer hardware components. The Fluxbox ISO has also received significant enhancements, including the addition of Job Scheduler, a front-end for cron tasks.

Additionally, Conky and the panel will no longer be hidden when utilizing the “Show Desktop” command, and a new script, “mxfb-quickshot_delay,” allows for screenshots with a pre-set delay.

Aside from these updates, MX Linux 23.4 comes with numerous bug fixes and language updates, ensuring a more seamless and user-friendly experience for individuals globally. Several new applications have been introduced to the MX “Test” repository, offering users more tools and choices to personalize their systems.

Kernel updates play a significant role in this release. The standard Xfce, KDE, and Fluxbox ISOs have been upgraded to the latest 6.1.106 kernel, guaranteeing enhanced performance and security.

Furthermore, the AHS ISO now adopts the 6.10.10 Liquorix kernel, catering to users with cutting-edge hardware requirements. Additionally, the MX Raspberry Pi Respin has been refreshed with the newest packages from the MX and Raspberry Pi OS repositories, extending the MX Linux experience to Raspberry Pi users.

If you’re keen on upgrading or testing out MX Linux 23.4, the new release is downloadable in various editions, including Xfce, KDE, Fluxbox, and a Raspberry Pi Respin. The distribution provides both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, with only the KDE variant lacking a 32-bit option.

Existing MX-23 users can seamlessly transition to the latest version, as all new packages and updates are accessible through regular update channels. In other words, a complete reinstallation is unnecessary—simply execute “apt update & apt upgrade” to elevate your system to the newest release.
