A formal announcement was made early in 2022 that after unsuccessful endeavors to bring a Bioshock movie to life with Universal Pictures, 2K would be collaborating with Netflix to transform the beloved video game series into a film. Despite this initial news, updates on the project have been scarce. However, recent reports suggest that the movie’s budget has been significantly reduced.
Variety reported that the upcoming Bioshock movie, helmed by director Francis Lawrence (renowned for Constantine, I Am Legend, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), is undergoing a production “reconfiguration” with a renewed emphasis on being more “intimate.” As part of this restructuring, the budget for the film has been cut, although the exact amount of the reduction remains undisclosed.
In discussions about these changes, producer Roy Lee mentioned that “the new leadership has trimmed the budgets. Therefore, we are crafting a more compact iteration. It will offer a more personal perspective rather than a large-scale, ambitious project.”
Despite the game’s distinctive visuals and backdrop, Bioshock 1 and 2 particularly delve into intimate narratives. Consequently, even with a reduced budget, a Bioshock movie, under capable direction, could flourish. Hopefully, this will be the outcome. Only time will tell.
