On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the formation of a Safety and Security Committee led by senior management, following the disbandment of its former regulatory board in mid-May.

The new committee will be tasked with providing suggestions to OpenAI’s board “on crucial safety and security determinations for OpenAI projects and activities,” as per the company’s statement.

Simultaneously, the developer of the ChatGPT virtual aide revealed the commencement of training for its “next frontier prototype.”

In a blog entry, the company expressed that it foresees the “resulting systems to propel us to the subsequent level of capabilities on our journey to AGI,” or artificial general intelligence — referring to AI that matches or surpasses human intellect.

The establishment of a novel regulatory team occurred subsequent to the dissolution of a prior group at OpenAI dedicated to the long-term hazards of AI. Preceding this, both overseers, OpenAI co-creator Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, publicized their exits from the Microsoft-supported startup.
