OpenAI unveils its latest 4o petite design.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, addressed attendees at the Microsoft Build conference at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on May 21, 2024.

OpenAI is set to introduce a new artificial intelligence model, known as “GPT-4o mini,” as part of its ongoing efforts to broaden the application of its popular chatbot. This new release is being touted as “the most adept and cost-effective small-scale model currently accessible.” The company plans to incorporate image, video, and audio capabilities into this model in the near future.

The mini AI model is derived from GPT-4o, OpenAI’s most swift and robust model unveiled in May, amid a livestreamed event with company executives. The ‘o’ in GPT-4o signifies ‘omni,’ indicating that GPT-4o boasts enhanced audio, video, and text functionalities. It can seamlessly operate in 50 different languages while delivering superior speed and quality, according to OpenAI.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI has garnered a valuation of over $80 billion from investors and is under constant pressure to lead the generative AI market. As the company invests significant amounts in processors and infrastructure to develop and train its models, it is imperative for OpenAI to explore revenue streams.

The announcement of the mini AI model echoes OpenAI’s commitment to stay ahead in the realm of “multimodality,” enabling a diverse array of AI-generated media types – encompassing text, images, audio, and video – within a singular tool: ChatGPT.

Last year, OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, expressed, “The world is multimodal. If you think about the way we as humans process the world and engage with the world, we see things, we hear things, we say things – the world is much bigger than text.” It has been a part of OpenAI’s vision to extend beyond text and code as singular interfaces to harness the full potential of these advanced AI models.

GPT-4o mini will be made accessible later today to free users of ChatGPT, in addition to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers. Next week, it will be rolled out to ChatGPT Enterprise users, as per the company’s statement.
