PhotoPrism’s Newest Release Introduces a Range of Handy Functions

Share it

PhotoPrism, a well-liked self-hosted image organization tool, has rolled out an upgrade, introducing numerous fresh functionalities and enhancements. Here they are.

A notable addition is the introduction of a scheduling feature, enabling users to effortlessly create database backups and re-index their image collections. This is especially beneficial for managing extensive assortments, ensuring that data is regularly backed up without the need for manual intervention.

Significantly, the default configurations now set up daily database backups, with the system storing up to three backup files to prevent excessive storage usage. Nevertheless, these configurations are customizable.

Individuals who favor different backup frequencies, retention guidelines, or specific backup schedules can tailor these settings in the setup options prior to installing the upgrade. The update also removes the --disable-backups directive, substituting it with more precise control alternatives.

For those with concerns about color precision, the latest PhotoPrism version incorporates support for ICC color profiles. It leverages the libvips graphic processing library to maintain these color profiles in thumbnails, reducing memory consumption and enhancing processing efficiency.

Users desiring to regenerate existing thumbnails to utilize this new color management capability can employ the photoprism thumbs -f instruction. However, if you are not using Docker, having libvips version 8.10 or above is necessary for either constructing or operating PhotoPrism.

The upgrade also concentrates on improving user accessibility. Tools like DeepL and Google Translate have generated absent user interface translations, with native speakers encouraged to contribute enhancements.

The interface itself has undergone modifications, including a reorganized Advanced Settings panel and a fresh segment for overseeing database and YAML file backups.

In addition to these key enhancements, the update implements several other refinements:

  • Search Improvements: Fresh sorting choices in search outcomes and the capability to locate images taken on the same day by tapping on a timestamp.
  • Automated Album Administration: Photos are now automatically endorsed upon being added to an album.
  • Privacy and Indexing: Faces tagged in private or archived images are now disregarded, and “*.thm” files are no longer deemed primary images.
  • Performance Enhancements: The Docker foundational image has been updated to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and Go has been elevated to the most recent stable release, bolstering security and performance.
