Approximately a year ago, the unveiling of New Arc Line by publisher Fulqrum and developer Dreamate introduced a fresh cRPG set in a world blending steampunk with magic and fantasy. The intriguing premise and features immediately caught my attention, prompting a keen interest in experiencing it firsthand at Gamescom 2024.
The initial plan was to offer a hands-on demonstration, but it unfolded as a presentation. Nevertheless, the session revealed enlightening insights into the game, still scheduled for a PC launch before the year concludes (with console versions potentially following later).
The core concept of New Arc Line revolves around the clash between magic and technology. Historically, mages and technologists engaged in real warfare, resulting in victory for the technologists who then rose to power. Although mages persist in the world, they exist on society’s fringes due to their defeat.
An ominous ailment known as Iron Plague emerged during the magotechnology conflicts. The disease’s transmission mechanism remains a mystery, and there is no known cure. Victims gradually transform into metal and face an inevitable demise. During the demo, developers showcased a Leprosarium, a facility for patients afflicted by this fatal sickness. Interestingly, the head doctor was absent, while another physician named Bailey assigned the task of relocating three patients.
In the impoverished sector of the city, inhabited by mages, interactive elements were swiftly unveiled, such as the option to inspect a nearby ambulance and scavenge useful items post-dice roll. Gathering the three patients necessitated a blend of combat and persuasive dialogue. New Arc Line incorporates turn-based combat, with each character possessing distinct initiative stats, leading to varied sequence of events in battles. Players face limitations on movement and action points per turn. Strategic planning becomes crucial as each ability consumes varying action points.
The presenter assumed the role of a Voodoo Mage during the demonstration, complemented by the sole current companion, Mick, a melee-oriented giant. Voodoo Mages wield numerous abilities and spells enabling battlefield control through enemy curses. For example, when outnumbered, the Voodoo Mage can deploy a taunt totem, diverting adversaries’ focus. The Soulbind spell, binding two enemies together, distributes damage between them upon success.
Advancing in abilities differs for technologists and mages. Technological progression centers on equipment; new abilities correlate with possessed weapons, supported by a crafting system for personalized gear. Mages acquire new spells by collecting magical cards and utilizing the Magecraft system to concoct unique spells.
Both technologists and mages share an XP-based leveling system. Skill enhancements and combat prowess upgrades are attainable, with the opportunity to select perks at specific levels, influenced by interactions within the game world. This flexibility permits players to tailor characters according to personal preferences.
The presenter emphasized that failing skill checks mirrors real life within the game. Despite failures, quests persist with altered outcomes. Players opting for save-scumming can reload to attain success, even when facing minuscule odds. However, the choice remains with the player as there are no restrictions.
Upon escorting the three Iron Plague patients to the Leprosarium, the presenter discovered the head doctor orchestrating an underground fighting ring instead of tending to patients or researching the disease. Dr. Bailey opposes this deviation, aiming to restore the facility’s focus to researching the Iron Plague for potential treatments or a cure. Players can opt to stay neutral or support either the head doctor or Dr. Bailey, each decision yielding different results.
The conflict between magic and technology in New Arc Line extends to regional affiliations favoring one over the other, dynamically influenced by player decisions and interactions. Mages accumulating excess power face corruption consequences, unlocking new abilities at higher tiers despite associated challenges. Choosing a side may impact gameplay, potentially affecting the performance of technological gear if favoring magic.
Following the captivating presentation, a brief Q&A session with Michal ÄŒernoch, Marketing Manager at Fulqrum Publishing, shed further light on New Arc Line.
