Review of the Apple Watch Series 10

Share it

In Cupertino, California, on September 12, 2023, the Apple Series 10 was showcased at the corporation’s headquarters.

The latest Apple Watch Series 10 is set to be released this Friday. After five days of testing, it offers enough enhancements to captivate newcomers and those contemplating an upgrade.

When Apple unveiled the new watches earlier this month, I wasn’t particularly thrilled. The company introduced a slightly sleeker design, marginally larger screens, and a few software features that will also apply to previous models. Nevertheless, when considered together, there’s quite a bit to appreciate.

The Apple Watch is a part of the Wearables, Home, and Accessories division of the company, which recorded $8.1 billion in revenue in the third fiscal quarter, a decrease of 2% from the previous year. CEO Tim Cook emphasized during the report that two-thirds of Apple Watch purchasers are still inexperienced with the device.

The Apple Watch Series 10, marking the tenth anniversary of the Apple Watch, is the most impressive iteration yet, even with some minor alterations.

Positives

The charging capability is exceptional. The Series 10 is equipped with new coils beneath the back glass, enabling it to reach 80% charge in just 30 minutes. By plugging it in while reading a book or taking a shower, I could ensure I had sufficient battery for the day ahead. A complete charge lasts 18 hours, a standard feature since the Series 1.

The screens are marginally larger, which is beneficial for typing and selecting music in a playlist or navigating buttons. While I have been using my personal Apple Watch Series Ultra for the past few years and have adapted to it, the larger display significantly improves responsiveness when sending a quick text message.

I appreciate the new speakers that allow you to listen to podcasts, music, or audiobooks without requiring headphones. Despite typically having my phone or AirPods with me, there are occasions when I leave my phone charging downstairs. It was delightful to continue listening to a section of an audiobook while putting my clothes away after work.

Apple has introduced new functionalities, such as the ability to identify sleep apnea, which received approval from the Food and Drug Administration on Monday and will be accessible as the watches reach consumers on Friday. It is already available for the Apple Watch Series 9. I am looking forward to trying it out, as I have dealt with sleep apnea in the past and am aware of the issues it can pose if undetected.

Negatives

The Series 10 is thinner compared to earlier Apple Watches, which were not notably bulky. I would prefer the prior thickness if it led to extended battery life.

The primary drawback remains the battery duration. The Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2 are attractive because they offer up to 36 hours of battery life. This feature is particularly beneficial while traveling or in the event of forgetting to charge the device overnight.

There are not many significant health advancements. Although reports suggest Apple is developing blood glucose monitoring or blood pressure monitoring for the Apple Watch, I did not anticipate either being available this year. However, I am concerned about investing in a device now only for it to become outdated with the release of major health features.

Is it worth buying?

The Apple Watch Series 10 is an excellent choice for two-thirds of individuals making their first Apple Watch purchase. With a new chip, larger screen, slimmer design, and rapid charging, it offers great value. Owners of a Series 6 or older may also find enough incentives to justify an upgrade. For those interested in extreme sports like diving or hiking, necessitating features such as highly accurate GPS and support for deep water submersion, or extended battery life, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 would be a better recommendation.
