Rocksteady finds itself in a precarious situation following the disappointing reception of its ambitious live-service game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which failed to resonate with audiences on all gaming platforms. As predicted, the underperformance of the game has led to inevitable lay-offs, a process that has now commenced.
Reports from various Rocksteady employees confirm the staff reductions to Eurogamer. The Quality Assurance (QA) department has been hit the hardest, with more than half of the QA testers being let go, resulting in only 15 members remaining in the team. Additionally, there have been job cuts in other departments within Rocksteady, although the exact number remains undisclosed.
Sources indicate that these layoffs are a direct consequence of the massive underperformance of Suicide Squad. Throughout this year, WB has highlighted the game’s poor sales during earnings calls, revealing a staggering $200 million loss attributable to the game on the company’s financial report.
The future outlook for additional content related to Suicide Squad remains uncertain in light of these developments. However, it appears likely that if Rocksteady manages to weather this storm, the studio will need to shift its focus away from Suicide Squad towards more promising projects in the future.
