The RTX 4070 GDDR6 serves as an alternative put forward by NVIDIA to address a temporary scarcity of GDDR6X memory. The intention was not to compromise high-end graphics cards and to ease the specifications for mid-range options. Despite featuring identical configurations, with the exception of memory type and memory frequency, what implications does this have on performance? This is precisely what Wcctech evaluated in their assessment of the Galax 1-Click-OC iteration!
RTX 4070 GDDR6: minimal deviation from its GDDR6X equivalent!
Extensive testing was conducted by Wcctech across a variety of video games and synthetic benchmarks. The card underwent rigorous testing in 27 games and 7 distinct benchmarks.
The results ultimately reveal that the performance differentials between the two versions remain minimal. In most instances, the variances fall within the margin of error, but two games in particular show notable disparities: Metro Exodus and Alan Wake 2. In these games, the GDDR6X model holds an advantage of 4.2% and 2.3% at 1080p, 9.1% and 4.8% at 1440p, and 10.4% and 2.8% at UHD.
As resolutions escalate and games require more memory resources, the performance gaps widen. While at 1080p there exists an overall performance difference ranging from 0 to 1% in favor of the RTX 4070 GDDR6X, at UHD, this difference increases to about 2.3%, with more pronounced cases as detailed previously.
Across 3DMark synthetic assessments, no significant disparities in scores were observed.
It is crucial to reiterate that the sole contrast between the two cards lies in the type of memory utilized: GDDR6 versus GDDR6X. This variance does impact bandwidth – 480 GB/s versus 502 GB/s, yet its influence in gaming scenarios is marginal, except at notably high resolutions.
Given that both versions are retailed at identical price points, opting for the GDDR6X variant seems more prudent. When faced with the choice of paying the same price, selecting a card that offers more for equivalent expenditure appears to be the logical decision.
