Actor Scarlett Johansson has spoken out against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, accusing him of using a voice similar to hers for its artificial intelligence voice software without her consent. This controversy arose after OpenAI recently launched its ChatGPT AI voice dubbed “Sky”, which many critics claimed sounded remarkably similar to Johansson’s voice in the movie “Her”.

Johansson revealed that Altman approached her in September for her voice and approached her again just two days before the announcement of ChatGPT-4o on May 13. Despite declining the offer due to personal reasons, Johansson was surprised to find out how much the new system, named ‘Sky’, resembled her voice, leaving her shocked, angered, and in disbelief.

OpenAI defended itself, stating that Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson, but rather belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice, whose identity cannot be disclosed to protect their privacy.

Scarlett Johansson expressed her concerns about the lack of transparency in the creation process of the Sky voice and the importance of protecting individual rights, especially in a time of growing concerns around deepfakes and protecting personal identities.

The actor has now taken legal action against OpenAI, hiring legal counsel to address the situation. She has demanded clarity on the process of creating the Sky voice and has called for the passage of appropriate legislation to safeguard individual rights in such scenarios.

OpenAI has not yet responded to Johansson’s statement, and the controversy surrounding the alleged unauthorized use of her voice in their AI voice software continues to unfold.
