SEGA has unveiled that an upcoming Crazy Taxi remake will utilize Unreal Engine to create a massively multiplayer open-world experience, as confirmed by the publisher.

New insights into the remake were disclosed in a recruitment video from Japan, where Crazy Taxi producer Kenji Kanno and the team discuss the game (via VGC). The Crazy Taxi remake, crafted by Sega’s Sapporo Studio, is intended to preserve the renowned Crazy Taxi essence while introducing new elements to the remake. The team in the video discusses a lifelike city inspired by the west coast of the United States, along with a map reminiscent of a theme park. The recruitment video can be found below.

Interestingly, the job recruitment page for the upcoming Crazy Taxi emphasizes Unreal Engine 5 and mentions that the remake will involve an open-world and elements of a “massively multiplayer driving game.” The game is being positioned as a “new major online title.”

According to a Bloomberg report from 2022, Sega was planning to revive old franchises like Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi. “The new Crazy Taxi has already been in development for over a year and the Tokyo-based entertainment group aims to release it within two to three years, the people said, asking not to be named as the information is not yet public,” Bloomberg’s Mochizuki stated in 2022.

Last year, Sega officially declared the resurrection of five classic IPs, including Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi. “Today’s announcement is just the start of our initiative,” Sega’s Shuji Utsumi remarked following the announcement last year. “First and foremost, our ambition will be to create great games with memorable characters and worlds. We hope fans of all ages will look towards our future with anticipation as we release these projects in the coming years.

As mentioned previously, the new Sega titles are expected to arrive on the Nintendo Switch successor, currently known as the Nintendo Switch 2. We will keep you updated as we discover more about Sega’s upcoming ventures, including the Crazy Taxi remake.
