As the launch of STALKER 2 approaches, GSC Game World developers are facing the final challenges in the game’s development journey. During an interview at Gamescom 2024, PR Specialist Zakhar Bocharov and Lead Producer Slava Lukyanenka highlighted the crucial role played by the Xbox team in optimizing the Xbox Series S version of the game.

Slava Lukyanenka: Our team possesses the expertise to handle various aspects of the game independently. However, the collaboration with the Xbox team has been invaluable in optimizing the game for the best possible performance on Xbox Series S. Their insights and recommendations have significantly contributed to enhancing the game. The optimization process is still ongoing, especially for the Xbox Series S, and we are grateful for the support from the Xbox team.

Regarding the performance on Xbox Series X, we have implemented two distinct modes. The Performance Mode allows the game to run at 60 FPS with slightly adjusted graphics compared to the Quality Mode, which showcases superior visual effects but runs at 30 FPS. Our goal is to strike a balance between these two modes for the Xbox Series S. Currently, the game runs at around 25 FPS on the Series S, but there is room for further optimization.

When asked about the collaboration with Xbox through Game Pass, GSC Game World expressed appreciation for the extensive support extended by Microsoft throughout the development of STALKER 2.

Zakhar Bocharov: The partnership with Game Pass and Microsoft has been incredibly supportive. Microsoft has allowed us the creative freedom to develop the game without any undue pressure. We are thankful for the positive and collaborative environment that Microsoft has fostered. The relationship with Microsoft, including figures like Sarah Bond and Phil Spencer, has been very positive, and we appreciate their encouragement and support.

STALKER 2 is scheduled to release on November 20 for PC and Xbox Series S|X, with availability on Game Pass from day one. Recent revelations from the Epic v. Apple lawsuit suggest that the game might remain a console exclusive on Microsoft’s platforms for a period of three months, even though this aspect has not been officially confirmed by Microsoft or GSC Game World.
