Starting July 2, Prime Video in Australia will begin showing advertisements.

Prime Video is currently available as a benefit of being an Amazon Prime subscriber in Australia. The service is considered one of the best streaming platforms in the country. The introduction of advertisements to Prime Video is set to commence on July 2, 2024. Amazon has assured users that the ads will be limited, with an aim to have fewer ads compared to traditional linear TV and other streaming providers.

The current subscription cost for Amazon Prime is AU$9.99 per month or AU$79 for an annual subscription. Despite the introduction of ads, the cost for the ad-supported Prime Video tier will remain the same. However, Amazon will offer a new ad-free tier for an additional AU$2.99 per month for those who prefer uninterrupted viewing.

Amazon justifies this move by stating that the introduction of ads will help them continue investing in high-quality content, ensuring sustainability for the long term. Streaming services like Netflix and Binge have already introduced ads in Australia, following a similar premise. With Disney Plus also incorporating ads in the UK, it’s likely that Australian streaming services will follow suit.

Prime Video boasts a wide range of compelling content, including shows like “Fallout,” “Road House,” “The Idea of You,” and highly anticipated returns like “The Boys,” “The Test,” and “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.” Additionally, a promotion with BritBox offers users a free taste of its content until June 17.

Subscribers can access the first episodes of various shows such as “Obituary,” “Three Little Birds,” “Stonehouse,” and more. This presents an opportunity for viewers to explore new content without any extra cost. Moreover, with a 30-day free trial for Prime Video and a 7-day free trial for BritBox, viewers have ample time to discover and enjoy new shows.

While the ads on Prime Video may raise concerns among subscribers, the specifics of their implementation and impact remain to be seen. Regardless, with the inevitability of ads on streaming platforms, users can enjoy ad-free viewing until July 2nd. Prime Video is just one of many services adapting to this trend, highlighting the evolving landscape of streaming media consumption.
