The up-and-coming Black Panther video game is set to introduce cutting-edge narrative technology that will be integrated across multiple EA facilities.

Confirmation came in July of 2023 that Electronic Arts is developing a Black Panther video game in collaboration with Cliffhanger Games, a Seattle-based organization founded by Kevin Stephens in 2021. This revelation followed a string of rumors and indicated that the game would be a single-player action/adventure experience from a third-person perspective, showcasing an original storyline.

While details on the project were scarce for a period (due to its planned release post-Iron Man from Motive), Laura Miele, the president of EA Entertainment and Technology, unveiled some intriguing insights about the Black Panther game. She shared this information during EA’s Investor Day 2024, highlighting the company’s focus on the $20 billion action/adventure and action/RPG segment of the gaming market.

Moving ahead with our Seattle studio, Cliffhanger Games, renowned for their innovative action RPGs like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Black Panther promises to be a tribute to fans, incorporating rich character designs, the immersive world of Wakanda, an original narrative, and revolutionary technology that promises groundbreaking design and storytelling. This novel approach will extend beyond this game, impacting numerous games and studios within our organization.

Of particular interest is the mention of new technology by Miele. This innovative tool is slated to revolutionize design and storytelling, not just in the Black Panther game but also in upcoming EA titles, as it is set to be leveraged by multiple internal teams.

No specifics have been disclosed as of yet, given that the game is still in its early stages of development. However, the dots seem to connect intriguingly. Cliffhanger Games’ founder, Kevin Stephens, boasts a background as the Director of Engineering at Monolith Productions before assuming the role of Vice President and Studio Head. This experience suggests a deep understanding of the Nemesis system found in Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.

The Nemesis system received acclaim for fostering unique interactions between players and NPCs, a feature yet to be replicated successfully in any other game. It’s plausible that Cliffhanger Games may be exploring a similar concept, potentially enhanced by generative AI, a technology extensively utilized at EA. The actual details of the Black Panther game remain a mystery for now, but the prospects are undeniably intriguing.
