The existence of the PS5 Pro was widely known at Gamescom 2024.

Throughout the year 2024, rumors and leaks extensively discussed the existence of the PS5 Pro. However, during the recent State of Play in late May, there was no mention of this upgraded hardware. As Summer neared its end, speculations arose regarding a potential delay in the release of the more powerful version of the PlayStation 5. Yet, developers attending Gamescom 2024 in Cologne this week began shedding light on the matter.

During a recent live stream, the Italian platform Multiplayer shared insights from a developer who expressed postponing their game launch due to the impending introduction of the PS5 Pro. Similarly, from my personal experience at Gamescom 2024, I encountered a developer who voluntarily disclosed that they had access to the specifications of the PS5 Pro. They seemed confident that the performance of Unreal Engine 5 would be significantly enhanced on this new iteration compared to the standard PlayStation 5. It is worth noting that the developer I interacted with differs from the one referenced by Multiplayer, highlighting the widespread knowledge of the hardware’s specifics among various game developers.

Consequently, it appears plausible that an official announcement is on the horizon. Drawing parallels with the unveiling of the PS4 Pro, which occurred on September 7, 2016, followed by its launch on November 10, a similar timeline could unfold, as suggested by an industry analyst in late July.

While enthusiasts await Sony’s confirmation of what seems to be a poorly kept secret within the industry, let’s revisit some of the more credible leaks surrounding the PS5 Pro:

  • 45% boost in performance for rasterized rendering due to an enlarged GPU and faster memory
  • Significantly enhanced ray tracing architecture, delivering an average speedup of 2-3 times, with peaks reaching 4 times
  • Customized machine learning design supporting 300 TOPS at 8-bit for powering the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, Sony’s take on Multi Frame Super Resolution utilizing the PlayStation Machine Learning (PSML) algorithm
  • PSSR represents an ML-improved iteration of Temporal Anti-Aliasing Upscaling (TAAU), requiring input akin to NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR, fully accommodating High Dynamic Range (HDR) pipelines, and omitting the need for game-specific training akin to the latest DLSS version
