The supporters of Trump in the technology industry are mistaken.

Legendary venture capitalist Michael Moritz, known for his success at Sequoia Capital, recently shared his views on the 2024 presidential election. In an opinion piece published by the Financial Times, Moritz made it clear that those within the industry who are backing Donald Trump “are making a significant error.”

Moritz, who has a long history of lucrative investments in companies like Google, PayPal, and LinkedIn, criticized Trump’s supporters in Silicon Valley as being self-serving. He questioned why intelligent and accomplished individuals are willing to overlook Trump’s actions.

Referring to Trump’s recent criminal conviction on 34 felony counts in New York State court, Moritz highlighted the dismissal of the trial as a politically motivated witch-hunt by many of Trump’s allies. Despite this, prominent figures like Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Elon Musk, David Sacks, Joe Lonsdale, and Doug Leone have openly supported Trump.

While Moritz acknowledged that Trump has received some backing in Silicon Valley, he expressed doubt about the likelihood of his success in this arena given his historically weak performance there. Other tech leaders, such as LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, have shown strong support for Democratic candidates like Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden.

With a substantial fortune amassed over the years, Moritz has been actively involved in philanthropic endeavors, supporting Democratic causes and initiatives aimed at countering Trump’s influence. His op-ed emphasized the dangers of powerful individuals aligning with authoritarians, warning against the belief that they can control such figures or that authoritarian leaders will deviate from their promises.

In his closing remarks, Moritz highlighted the historical tendencies of authoritarians and cautioned against underestimating the potential consequences of supporting such leaders. As the debate intensifies within the tech industry, it remains to be seen how these differing viewpoints will shape the future of political alliances and investments.
