Update for Windows: improvement in speed for AMD processors

Recently, news broke out about the latest Windows update, version 24H2, being made available to testers who are part of the Insider programme. This update is set to enhance the speed and overall performance of AMD processors, both new and old models. A performance test conducted by the Hardware Unboxed website demonstrated an average performance increase of 10% for AMD CPUs like the Ryzen 7 7800X and Ryzen 7 7700X, with peaks of up to 30% in specific games.

Excitingly, users don’t need to wait for the official 24H2 update to experience these speed enhancements. Those already on the current version of Windows with the 23H2 update can access an optional update via Windows Update, under the “Advanced Options” section, with the patch KB5041587. It’s worth noting that your Windows system should be up to date to receive this patch. According to AMD, this patch is anticipated to deliver similar performance boosts as the upcoming 24H2 update, as AMD proactively released this patch before the official Windows update to address the situation promptly.

Performance improvements under scrutiny and subject to debate

Despite the significant gains reported with the 24H2 update and KB5041587 patch, there are ongoing discussions regarding the actual impact of these enhancements. Some testers have conducted evaluations post-update and have reported less noteworthy improvements compared to what was initially publicized by Hardware Unboxed, with a few even experiencing performance declines.

For instance, Hardware Luxx conducted various tests comparing the 24H2 and 23H2 versions, highlighting a reduced average improvement. They noted performance dips of up to 8.5% on the 7800X3D model in the ‘Control’ game at 720p, along with a peak improvement of 23.5% compared to the initially claimed 30% or more by Hardware Unboxed.

As further tests and feedback are being awaited, several testers seem to align more with Hardware Luxx’s observations, suggesting that the actual enhancements might be less substantial than initially portrayed. Hence, it is advisable to approach the situation with caution and await additional insights.
