A recently added feature to Google Home now allows Google Assistant to read out your daily Fitbit stats, a function that many users believe should have been available three years ago.

Despite the delay in Google’s latest integration with Fitbit, it’s a step that could help optimize the way you view your health stats. The latest integration allows you to view your health and wellness data without having to rely on looking at a screen – a convenience that many users have been eagerly anticipating. Fitbit’s first integration with Google Assistant since the voice control tool rolled out to the Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 opens up new possibilities for tracking and managing fitness metrics with ease.

How to set up Fitbit in the Google Home app

To get started on your new Google Assistant routine, here’s how you can set up your Fitbit to Google Home. Follow these steps to link your Fitbit device or Google Fit and start hearing your daily stats read aloud on compatible devices:

  1. Go to ‘Automations’ in the Google Home app and tap ‘Add’.
  2. From there, tap ‘Personal’. Google Assistant will only be able to read your health stats under personal routines, not household routines.
  3. Give your routine a name, then tap ‘Get wellness info’.
  4. Select the health data you want Google Assistant to read aloud in your routine. There are two sections you can edit, one with activity data and one with sleep data.

Analysis: Three years too late?

Although the new feature is a welcome addition for those who have been eagerly waiting for Google and Fitbit to integrate more seamlessly, some users argue that it comes three years too late. Google’s acquisition of Fitbit in 2019 marked the beginning of what many expected to be a swift integration of features like Google Assistant with Fitbit devices. However, it wasn’t until the end of 2020 that Google Assistant was rolled out to Fitbit devices, leaving users feeling like they had been waiting for a significant upgrade for far too long.

Prior to Google’s acquisition, some Fitbit devices already had voice assistant capabilities – such as the Fitbit Versa 2 with Alexa integration. The delay in introducing Google Assistant to Fitbit devices raises questions about the pace of innovation in the fitness tracking industry and the competition with other smartwatches and fitness trackers that already offer similar features.

However, the new integration does bring a unique element to the table – the ability to have your daily stats read aloud as part of your routine. This feature, combined with its compatibility with smart home hubs like the Google Nest Hub, may offer a new level of convenience and integration for users who rely on their devices for health and wellness tracking.
