Anthropic has revealed their latest and most potent artificial intelligence model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, positioning itself as a rival to OpenAI.

Claude, a chatbot akin to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, has seen a surge in popularity over the past year. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI research executives, boasts support from tech heavyweights like Google, Salesforce, and Amazon, having secured funding deals totaling approximately $7.3 billion recently.

This announcement comes on the heels of Anthropic launching its Claude 3 model family in March and OpenAI’s GPT-4o in May. The company reports that Claude 3.5 Sonnet surpasses its predecessor, Claude 3 Opus, in speed, marking the first release from Anthropic’s new Claude 3.5 lineage.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is accessible for free on the company’s website, Claude.ai, and the Claude iPhone app. Subscribers to Claude Pro and Team can enjoy the latest model with enhanced rate limits.

According to the company, Claude 3.5 Sonnet exhibits notable enhancements in understanding subtlety, humor, and complex instructions. Noteworthy features include its ability to write high-quality content with a natural and relatable tone, along with proficiency in coding tasks.

Anthropic has also introduced “Artifacts,” a tool allowing users to request tasks from the Claude chatbot, such as generating text documents or code. The output is then displayed in a dedicated window, creating an interactive space where users can view, modify, and expand upon Claude’s creations in real-time. The company anticipates that Artifacts will be beneficial for activities like code development, legal document drafting, business report writing, and more.

Meanwhile, as startups such as Anthropic and OpenAI make strides in generative AI, competition amongst tech giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta intensifies. These firms are engaged in an AI arms race to incorporate the latest technology and secure their standing in a market predicted to surpass $1 trillion in revenue within the next decade.

Anthropic’s recent model launch follows the introduction of its initial enterprise offering in May. The company’s business-centric plan, “Team,” was developed over several quarters, with input from beta-testing involving 30 to 50 customers across industries like technology, finance, law, and healthcare. Daniela Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic, shared in a recent interview that the genesis of this enterprise service was driven in part by requests from customers seeking a tailored product for their businesses.

Moreover, the arrival of Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger as Anthropic’s chief product officer, following the debut of their new product, underscores the company’s commitment to growth. Krieger’s prior experience as the CTO of Meta-owned Instagram, scaling the platform to over a billion users and expanding the engineering team to 450 members, brings valuable expertise to Anthropic. Jan Leike, OpenAI’s former safety leader, also joined Anthropic in May, bolstering the company’s talent pool.
