The debut of an official TikTok account by Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday highlights the significance of the social media platform in the 2024 presidential campaign for engaging with voters.

In her initial brief TikTok post, Harris explained her decision to join the popular app, mentioning that she noticed her presence on the “For You Page” and decided to engage directly.

Various TikTok users celebrated Harris’s emergence as the Democratic Party’s front-runner for the presidential nomination by creating numerous entertaining videos, some incorporating elements from the summer trend of Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’.

Interestingly, Harris’s swift embrace of TikTok stands in contrast to President Joe Biden, who had previously featured alongside Harris on the @BidenHQ account, now rebranded as @KamalaHQ. There have been reservations expressed by U.S. lawmakers regarding TikTok’s ownership by a Chinese tech firm.

Despite TikTok’s prohibition on political advertisements, its immense popularity among American youth and the general populace has made it a crucial campaigning tool for politicians.

Former President Donald Trump also launched an official TikTok profile in June, acknowledging concerns over national security and privacy while highlighting his belief that banning the app would only serve to bolster Facebook, a platform he views unfavorably.
