Miyazaki from FromSoftware discusses job cuts in the gaming industry

The year 2024 has proven to be a challenging time for developers in the video gaming field, with a substantial number of artists being released from almost every major game publisher. Addressing the current circumstances and emphasizing his commitment to preventing such events at FromSoftware, Miyazaki declared, “As long as I am accountable for this company, I will not allow that to occur.”

During an interview with PCGamer, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware, responded candidly to questions about the recent spate of industry layoffs. Miyazaki assured that he would not want the same fate to befall the staff at FromSoftware and expressed confidence that the parent company Kadokawa shared this sentiment.

Drawing parallels to the well-known actions of former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata amidst Nintendo’s challenges with the Wii U, Miyazaki iterated, “Iwata-san, the former president of Nintendo, said that ‘people who fear losing their jobs are afraid of creating good products.’ I am summarizing his statement, but I fully agree with this philosophy.”

Asserting his firm stance, Miyazaki concluded, “While we cannot predict the future of From and Kadokawa definitively, at least under my leadership, I would not permit such events to happen. Hopefully, this assurance provides comfort to our players and supporters.”

It is hoped that such a mindset endures and that more industry leaders adopt a similar approach to safeguarding their teams.
