The introduction of Sony’s wearable air conditioner marks the beginning of a journey towards creating a functional Dune stillsuit.

Living in London might not be as extreme as surviving on the desert planet Arrakis like the Fremen in Frank Herbert’s Dune, but hot and crowded commuting conditions can feel suffocating. Sony’s innovative Reon Pocket 5 brings a touch of science fiction to reality by offering a wearable thermo device designed to cool or warm your body based on environmental conditions. By utilizing a plate-like “thermos module” and five sensors, including those for temperature, humidity, and motion, this device aims to optimize your comfort whether standing, sitting, or in motion.

The Reon Pocket 5 includes five levels of cooling and four levels of warmth, providing versatility for various situations, from a hot train ride to a chilly flight. When paired with the Reon Pocket Tag accessory, the device can automatically adjust to external conditions. However, for manual control, Sony offers the Reon Pocket App for iOS and Android, allowing users to adjust settings via Bluetooth connectivity. With up to 17 hours of battery life, this device is not only convenient for daily commutes but also suitable for outdoor activities like hiking.

While the concept of wearable air conditioning is not entirely new, Sony’s Reon Pocket 5 introduces this technology to a broader audience outside of Asia. Available for pre-order at £139, the package includes the device, a Reon Pocket Tag, and a white neckband. Users also have the option to purchase a beige-colored neckband for £25 to suit their style preferences.

Sony Reon Pocket 5: Hands-On Experience

For those curious about the practicality of the Reon Pocket 5, hands-on experiences have shown promising results. During a demo event, users found the device effective at quickly adjusting body temperature. Despite its compact size, the thermos module’s placement on the neck provides efficient temperature regulation for overall comfort.

Weighing just 116g, the Reon Pocket 5 is lightweight and comfortable to wear. However, its design may attract attention in public settings due to the protruding thermos module at the back. While the idea of constantly maintaining the perfect body temperature raises questions, this device excels in providing comfort during travel scenarios.

In a world where technology continues to innovate daily essentials, the Sony Reon Pocket 5 offers a unique solution to beat the heat and stay comfortable on the go. With its blend of functionality and futuristic design, this wearable air conditioner is a step towards turning sci-fi concepts into everyday realities.
